I've read several of Mo Hayder's other books but couldn't really get going with this one, the story just failed to catch my interest.

To be released at tonight's Leeds Meetup where hopefully someone will enjoy it more.

Great title. Wanted to find some gore this evening and this looked like one of the best possibilities going...

Wow.

I did wonder if this was going to be a new take on the whole Wicker Man idea, but there is so much more to this story. It is a great creepy thriller, well-written and real edge-of-your-seat stuff. And you can't presume anything in this story. I really enjoyed it. So glad I picked it up!

Basic story... jounarlist Joe Oakes goes to small west Scottish island to meet odd and reclusive religious community there. There have been outside reports of the devil walking the beaches there, and Oakes has a history with the group's original and now shunned leader. What can be going on???? I don't want to write too much in case it'll spoil it for anyone who may stumble across this and want to read the book. But it's shocking, and not what you'd immediately predict.

This is fantastic! I really found it hard to put it down and I read it within 36 hours! I thought it was well written, creepy, gory, shocking, gripping, unusual, intriguing - just about the whole nine yards.
I'm sure that there will be others at Meetup who will enjoy this and so I'm going to take it back there.

Dorothy made me take it!

I'm afraid this didn't appeal to me at all. I didn't particularly warm to the protagonist and worked out the twist in the tail (excuse the pun) about half way through. I can see this being made into a very poor film - probably staring Nicholas Cage.
