Theda Wearmouth is named after her mother's favourite star of the silent screen, but that is the last vestige of glamour to touch her life. The thirties are lean years in the Durham coalfields, and Theda determines on nursing as a means of escape.
When war breaks out, Theda's skills are put to good use in a Children's Ward. Then out of the blue, she is posted to a special unit of the hospital dealing with German and Italian prisoners of war. It is a challenge she does not believe she can rise to; until she meets Major Ken Collins, a surgeon invalided out of the Army Medical Corps and a man whose cool exterior belies his passionate nature. He helps Theda to see the enemy through different eyes.
But just as Theda allows herself to love, she and Ken are separated. Staff Nurse Wearmouth carries on with her duties but beneath the veneer of competence, Theda is faced with the most agonising dilemma of her life...
