The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
10 journalers for this copy...
Bought on impulse at Tesco's just before I left the UK again to go home after my visit to Kent.
I'm not going to tell too much about the story, because even on the cover it says: "It's important that you start to read without knowing what it is about".
I was very impressed by this clever story!
Reserved for now, because I have a lot of non BC friends with teenage children that want to borrow it for school essays.
December 2008 update:
Back home and available again.
Found it on a wishlist and will send it as a Christmas present to someone I want to thank for her understanding!

By mail to aava in Finland. Merry Christmas!
As I have told some I'm away from home working in Lapland and I've not been able to register my bookcrossing books which have landed on my home step. But I gave permission to my boyfriend to open them so that you know I have the books and they are not lost or anything. This is one of them and I'm really happy! Can't wait to start reading this. Boyfriend might have to send it on for me...
Thank you so much bestfriends, you're the best :) And I will keep this book moving as well, I think it looks like a book I hope many will and want to read.
A clever but also a very horrible story that I just had to read from page one to finish in one go. I wanted to shout out loud to Bruno: "Don't go there! Don't do it!". But couldn't. It's definately not a children's book althought it is written from a child's point of view. After finishing the story I kept staring at the last paragraph for a long time. I'm not so sure it is true. That's what is so sad about the book. There are more little boys like Bruno and Shmuel in this day and age.
Thanks again bestfriends for sharing this.
The book is on its way to Norway to celebrate a very special occasion. I hope this book will bring joy even if it's not a happy book.
Thanks a lot, aava! The book arrived today. John Boyne is new to me and from all comments I understand I have a very special read in store. I will probably save it for a holiday read. Thank you!
aava, you are the best Birthday Buddy ever! You always send such wonderful books! Wonderful may not be the best word for this novel as it is so heartbreakingly sad, but it is so well written and the way the story is told gives new perspectiv to a well known theme. Innocence looking at cruelty. It is one of those books that will always stay with you.

The book arrived safely in my mail box today! And I couldn't keep my hands off of it, so I managed to read a couple of pages at work, since I picked up the mail on my way there..
Looking forward to the rest!
Thank you so much, sota48, for starting this ray!
Simply a wonderful book!
Won't say anymore, since it's much about not knowing before you read it!
It travels on to Haugtussa tomorrow!

Have a nice trip, Bruno, and a good read, Haugtussa!
The book arrived in Stavanger today! I look forward to this one.
Well, I'm not convinced. I had really high expectations about this book - always a dangerous thing. It is a book that I have been thinking about using in class. But...
It was an easy read.
The book made me wonder whether this was a 'normal' stratgy that people used to understand the world they lived in, and to explain their own behaviour. To be honest, it sounded like the grandmother was the only reasonable grown-up!
I'm glad I got a chance to read the book, and it will travel again soonish..
The book arrived today, thanks!
The story really moved me, and I am glad I had the chance to read it. I agree this is a clever story; the contrast between innocence and and cruelty is very well described.
Thanks for sharing this book with me!
This little book will soon continue its travel towards Sweden.

Ooooh!! Thank you!! =) And the book is bought at Tesco's I loooove Tesco's! =)
I'll send the book to tuttasb when I've read it.
I don´t know what to say about this book. I like the way it is told although I think that Bruno is too naive for a nine year old boy. I like the way he mispronounce names and that makes me start to wonder if he is naive on purpose to be able to keep some sense in a horrible world. I was not surprised by the ending and in some weird way I thought it was beautiful in all it´s viciousness. At least Shmuel and Bruno had each other - that´s more than a lot of the people had in the same situation.
Thank you!! I've wanted to read this book for some time now and here it is! Looking forward to read it.

This was hard to put down. I have to agree with some of the previous comments like Bruno being a bit too naive for a 9year old and the book being a too "easy read" for such a cruel and horrific theme. That said I really liked this book, clever writing and from a new perspective. I think most of us reading this already got a lot of detailed information about what happened in places like these so we're able to fill out the blanks where a naive 9year old can't manage to see the whole picture.
