Not usually the sort of book I like but this was a good read, subtle and profound in parts.

A Brit who spends half her time in Vancouver, yesterday I was feeling homesick for that beautiful city as I wandered through Chiswick, West London. I stopped for an expensive cup of tea in a health food store and felt so dislocated and out of place in my native town - I reached for a book on the shelf behind me for a little distraction and there it was, the quintessential Vancouver author - Douglas Coupland. For a moment it seemed that Vancouver had reached across those 9000 miles to say that it hadn't forgotten me. I've read this book already but started to reread it with immense pleasure in that lonely little cafe. As to the book itself, Coupland understands our baffling modern world better than anyone. And he's an old romantic at heart which means that he often gives absurdly optimistic and happy endings to his stories. If you want an exquisite study of modern loneliness try his "Eleanor Rigby." Unbelievable denoument to that one too but hey! I'll forgive our Dougie anything...
