The Secret Life of Bees was consumed with endless amount of honey, how else, as I caught a flue, but reading this book make it much easier. I really enjoyed while reading, I WAS there with them - the places became very real in my head. Though now, some days later, the charm has faded a little, I guess it was a book to read, not to remember.

But I would really like to visit "the calendar-girls", wherever it would be... I miss August.

Now the book is by misterpip.

Journal Entry 11 by misterpip on Friday, January 30, 2009
Thanks for passing this book around! I have it and will start tomorrow! Updates then soon to come...

Journal Entry 12 by misterpip on Tuesday, March 31, 2009
This was a wonderful read! Sometimes a bit too teenage-girl for my point of view, but on the whole, rich with perspectives on the american south, rural living, race relations and coming of age...

The calendar girls were incredible characters, and all of the bits about honey-making and bees were fascinating too. I think on the whole quite memorable and a rich and uplifting story.

Thanks for sending it around!

It's packaged and soon to be on its way to j4shaw. Enjoy!

I really really enjoyed this book. It had be laughing, crying & frustrated!
I loved the character Rosaleen, and her no nonsence attitude to life.
Predictable in parts, yet even though you can expect whats coming next it still has you choked up.
My sister in the UK read this at the same time and we submitted our views via email half way through, and will do so again now we're finished.
Looking forward to seeing the film.

I was driving back from Canberra searching for a mailbox to post off Secret Life of Bees to the next person in the ring and found this house next to a little old post office!! Very fitting I thought.

I finished reading this book in Canberra whilst on a w/e trip. It then did a road trip through NSW and back into Victoria, so this book has travelled to a few extra places!

Quite an enjoyable read this one. Very much linking the personal, the longing for self identity along with the struggle for self-identity that was the civil rights movement at the time. sending to Davis59 as soon as i get the address.

Enjoyable and easy to read, set in hot, South Carolina when racial tension was rife. Good strong characters, especialy the 'sisterhood' who took Lilly and Rosaleen in. I look forward to seeing the movie now. Will be sending it on to Wodfest this weekend. Thank you jumpingin!

Hi, the book arrived today!
Thank you for the postcard I love van Gogh, my faviourite artist!

I am going away on Sunday until the beginning of Sept.... for summer.... so I will take the book with me and post it on to the next person when I have finished it.

Journal Entry 23 by lidlekiwi on Monday, July 27, 2009
Thanks for sharing this book, I have enjoyed reading it.
I read it while I was in Crete. My friend is going to post it on to the next person as I am not going back to London until Sept and she flew back yesterday. So depending on when she posts it....... the next reader should get it soon anyways.

I didn't like Lilly's father and my heart when out to Lilly. What a horrible way to lose a mother. Something I don't think anyone would get over.

What a great little book. This was a real heartwarmer, but also an eye-opener to the racial ignorance in the deep south, the reverberations of which can still be felt today. I also learnt a lot about bees, which is lucky as I just found out I have the chance to don the bee-keeping gear and go to check out a hive later this week, can't wait :-)

Have contacted franloe and will send on at the weekend
