Written in 1951, this book presents a unique and somewhat poignant snapshot of Iraq, and the rest of the world, in this time period. The messages of peace and anti-Communism take on added significance when you understand that this was published only six years after the end of World War II.
Strangely, the mystery to be solved was less important to me than the setting of the story itself. It's difficult these days to imagine Iraq as anything other than a country torn apart by wars, or suppressed by dictatorships. The joy and wonder that Victoria Jones experiences while visiting this breathtaking "cradle of civilization" was refreshing and hopeful.
