A series of short stories, for the most part set in post-war Japan as an ancient culture is left trying to re-establish customs and traditions which are rapidly being usurped by Western, particularly American influences. Each story is well written and Waters seems to have a real strength in describing elements of the landscape, particularly anything relating to water. Many of the stories are sad, touching or regretful and an almost universal theme of the mourning of change is woven into each story, be it the change in health, change in pace of life or change in tradition.

Thanks again grubsneerg for this book, it was a nice read. I'm going to send it as a RABCK to ApoloniaX after easter as I know she likes Asian literature and is interested in Japan.

Brilliant short stories set in post-war Japan, all with a beautiful melancholic undertone, very well written, in that understated way that I so love in many Japanese novels or short stores. Recommendable.
