I read this many years ago when it first came out, but I wanted to reread it since Afghanistan has been central to world events over the last six years.

Although I know I read this book before, reading it again was like reading it for the first time. It was a very interesting look at the Afghan civil war and the Soviet invasion written and taking place during the conflict. Published in 1986, the action took place from 1981-1983; the Soviet Union pulled out of Afghanistan in 1989. The brutality of war, the hostility of the Afghan terrain, the conviction of freedom fighters, rebels, and soldiers that they each are on the right side of the war they are fighting each other in are, unfortunately, much clearer to me today than they were 20 years ago.

You can even keep it, if you like, but are books really happy when they're just sitting on a shelf? I'd have to say no.
