Set in the late 19th century, Anita Shreve's novel begins when professor of English Nicholas Van Tassel meets and falls in love with Etna Bliss, whose prospects are dim. Nicholas offers her marriage, and, though she doesn't return his passion, she accepts. But Van Tassel is unable to accept his wife's lack of love for him, and over the years he stoops to a variety of despicable acts related not only to his doomed passion for Etna, but also to his unbridled ambition.

I've read the book and I think it is quite a nice "in between read". I like the way is written as a kind of memoir. What annoys me a bit is that I cannot understand that Nicholas and Etna actually marry. There is no love from Etna's side. I would love to have read the story from Etna's point of view, because she seems like a very interesting character. Whereas Nicholas just seems like quite an unsymphetatic man to me, and he doesn't seem to know Etna at all.

Snaffled this from the table at the meet up at the Camel and Artichoke in Waterloo yesterday. I've enjoyed the Anita Shreve novels which I've read before: always light and easy going but interesting and well written.

Well, having talked about it for over a year, we have finally sold our house. I thought it would take months in the current climate but 12 days after it went on the market, it sold. So we had to find somewhere to move to pretty damn quick and now all that remains is to dot the is and cross the ts before moving, hopefully in 2 to 3 weeks. So that huge pile of 'to be read' books which has been growing in the corner of the study for the last three years is about to be deciminated so that we have less to pack and less to move. I don't like releasing books before I've read them but needs - in his case hubby's back - must. Expect to see lots of books released in London and its environs in the next few days and weeks. In the meantime, if the book is still marked available, please PM me if you would like it. I'm more than happy to post a few out to keen readers!
