"A Tree Grows In Brooklyn is a novel .... first published in 1943. It relates the coming-of-age story of its main character, Francie Nolan, and her Irish-American family struggling against poverty in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. The novel is set in the first and second decades of the 20th century. The book was an immense success, a nationwide best-seller that was distributed to servicemen overseas. It was also adapted into a popular motion picture, the first feature film directed by Elia Kazan.
Much of the book can be thought of as thinly disguised autobiography. Many of the characters derive from actual inhabitants of Williamsburg with whom the author grew up."

Really loved this book. I can see why it's been so popular for so long. I had tears in my eyes when Francie found the roses on her desk on Graduation Day.
Really good story of a family helping each other (Katie and her sisters).
Thanks Lisa-B & bluecat07 for sharing.
Passing on to a friend (not a BCer)

Picked up today at The Bean, OBCZ. Thank you. I have come across a few copies of this, but BookCrossed them without reading them. It sounds good from the journal entries but I am rather snowed under at present. I hope to read it in future when I come across another copy. For now I will take it to the Meet tomorrow at Rugby.
