Like Water for Chocolate

Another book I have read good things about, even though I have no clue what exactly it is about. Picked it up for 10p in my favorite bookstore in London as well.
Hm. I don''t really know what to say about this book, except that it definitely wasn''t my cup of tea.
I am absolutely no friend of this so-called "magical realism" - to me that just sounds like nonsense. The story itself is so-so, nothing extraordinary, and the writing didn''t blow me away either. The recipes withing the text were a nice touch, though.
Maybe someone else has more luck with this.

The book goes out to lukutuoli as a RABCK. I hope she will like it more than I did. ;o)

The book has safely arrived - thanks for this RABCK, samulli! Seems to be quick read, but unfortunately has to wait some time in my TBR-shelf :)
I've heard this book to be praised so much, I must admit it was a little disappointment for me. The story was captivating, however, and exotic with it's Mexican atmosphere. On the other hand it wasn't more than a typical love story, I found it even too romantic. I admit I skipped most of the recipes and descriptions of the foods, they weren't very interesting, although made the structure of the book special.
I suppose this book could get some new readers from our local BC-meeting next week!

Afte I am done with the book, it will probably travel with me to the city of love, Paris.

Well, I have just finished this Mexican story with mixed feelings. I felt that the cooking instructions for stirring, chopping, grounding and mixing directly there in between of other sentences kind of broke the flowing storytelling and that irritated me. The subjects the book talks about are strong, but I did not feel the story to be specially moving. Romantic and beautiful it was, but somehow it did not manage to fully charm me.
Right now Mexico is in the headlines for the more sad news, the dangerous flu epidemia spreading over the country and also worldwide.
The book will now travel to Paris to find some new readers there.

The OBCZ shelf in Paris was unfortunately closed when we tried to visit there although based on the opening hours it should have been open :(.
So I have left this book to a different place, in the dowstairs lobby of the Mercure Ronceray Hotel located at 10, boulevard Montmartre.
