Volume One of Flight features stories by professionals and non-professionals alike, all playing on the theme of flight in its many incarnations. From the maiden voyage of a home-built plane to the adventures of a young courier and his flying whale to a handful of stories about coming of age and letting things go, this first volume of Flight is full of memorable tales that will both amaze and inspire.

This is one of my favourite books in a long, long time. The art is simply incredible. I''ve inadvertently managed to end up with two copies of volume one! So it is to be released into the wild, to hopefully inspire many more.

What a great book. Something for everyone and the illustrations are amazing. I especially loved "Paper and String" and "Air and Water". I will send this off as soon as I have FreePages' address.

Thanks for starting this ring somethinksfishy!

Just finished this and organised to post to catsalive. Like "goodthinking max" I really liked "Paper and String" and I quite liked "The Maiden and the River Spirit" although I'm not sure what that one had to do with "Flight"?! Flight of the golden thermos maybe!

Re: "The Maiden and the River Spirit" - flights of fancy, perhaps?

Off to Fleebo this morning.

Received safely by mail. Thanks!

A mixed bag - all with competent art, and some of it's quite lovely. I have, of course, come across "Copper" (the boy with the dog, http://www.boltcity.com) online, but as far as I can recall, I haven't seen any of the other authors before.
"Taj Mahal" was, well, dull, and not as pretty as the others either.
"Formidable" by Bengal was disappointing - nice art but hopelessly clumsy dialogue. He/she could stand to hire a writer, and just do the illustrating.
"Hugo Earheart" feels like part of an interesting established comic but it's too short to stand alone.
The thing about comics is that they take a lot of time to create a short, short story. A ten-page story would only be half a page without the pictures... and you have to be pretty talented to fit a meaningful story in half a page. A comic book short story is best suited to a single-incident story, like in "Deep Blue" or the Copper stories.
I also enjoyed Scott McCloud's afterword as much as any of the individual stories. (Read his "Understanding Comics" if you haven't already, and if you have any interest at all in comics as a serious art form.)
I also had a look at the Image Comics backlist on the back page. I recommend Kabuki: Circle of Blood, and Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl? (both only if you don't mind violence in your comics.) Kabuki has absolutely amazing artwork, Powers is more for the thumping good story.
Thanks for sharing this book! It's great to be introduced to new comics authors.

An interesting introduction with a very varied collection of stories and artwork . . . some I liked, some were a bit blah, and some I just didn't 'get' at all. I read it, put it down for a while and then read it again to see if I was missing something; so sorry to keep it so long. I appreciate that an awful lot of work does go into comics and graphic novels - but can't say that I'm a convert as yet.
:-D

Thanks for the opportunity.

Off to alinci-g in the morning.

Journal Entry 14 by alinci-g from Burwood East, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, March 4, 2008
Ooops! This book arrived early February and I have only just got around to journalling it. Sorry.
Our experiences with it have been very interesting. Both my husband and I read it. He is a very observant person and enjoyed it a lot. He got much more out of it than I did because I found that my eyes skipped past the pictures on a quest for words. I looked at one but got nowhere with it as it was all pictures and I was too tired to work out what the pictures were trying to tell me! I have the same problem with cartoons in the paper which is why I usually don't get the message or joke! So I learned a bit about myself as well as having a new experience.
Thanks, somethinksfishy.
Now its off to silvermoonwryn
