For my classes this semester.
I read this for a class, and I thought it was quite interesting. It's very detailed and covers a lot of subjects.
The back says:
Here is the first book to tell the whole story of the English language. Written for general readers, The Story of English presents a stimulating and comprehensive record of spoken and written English -- from its Anglo-Saxon origins some two thousand years ago to the present day, when English is the dominant language of commerce and culture with more than one billion English speakers around the world. From Cockney, Scouse, and Scots to Gulla, Singlish, Franglais, and the latest African-American slang, this sweeping history of the English language is the essential introduction for anyone who wants to know more about our common tongue.

Arrived yesterday. I will start this as soon as I can, but please be patient as I will shortly be going on holiday and will not risk another's books on beaches and at sea.
I have a amateur interest in language in general and was looking forward to this book.
Unfortunately I found it too heavy going and too detailed for me to really get into it without my mind wandering and resisting the urge to skip to the end of chapter. I guess that if I was studying I might have more use for it but as a day to day read it was too detailed to keep my attention but having said the above I fear that as a text book it would be considered too light weight. I much preferred Mervyn Bragg's book the Adventure of English as it was more entertaining and easier reading.
Have PMed pepelepew.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book so much, but it really surprised me. It offers wonderful lesson in history of language and I, it must be said, found myself surprised by some things written there, although I know they'd be obvious to everyone else. I slapped myself couple of times for not seeing certain things coming :) Nicely written, the book is full of interesting facts. At some parts, I laughed out loud. It made me appreciate the languages I am still learning and the one I've been speaking all my life.
Thank you for sharing, jaenelle, I'll send this on in the next couple of days :)

What a pity, I simply don't have time to finish this book. I read it halfway and loved it, thanks so much for sharing! I'll try to find another copy of this so that I can finish it. Since it's been at my place for two months I decided to pass it on.

Now it's time to start the book.
Sorry for taking so long to finish. Really enjoyed the book. I got the address from bearyfriend. Hope she likes it as much as I did.
Book arrived, thanks for sending all the way. At first glance seems like a school text and looks heavy. I'm also quite surprised seeing the BC label covering those reviews, as I actually read them, even those authors acknowledgements.
I didn't go into the details but skipped here and there reading only those history behind some of the stories. I have jotted down some interesting titles and names of historical figures to go read up more. Thanks Jaenelle for sharing. Who knows I may just go get a copy and read slowly. Will send out once I receive the next mailing address.
