Bought in a moment of weakness. I seem to be having more and more of these moments.

Synopsis
Norah's grieving for her baby girl, Phoebe, who died in childbirth. In another city, another woman raises Norah's little girl as her own. It's 1964 and a blizzard is blowing outside the small-town surgery where Dr David Henry finds himself delivering Norah's twins. Relieved, he sees that his son is born healthy, but recognizes the signs of Down's Syndrome in his daughter's face. In a split-second decision that will haunt their family for ever, he asks the nurse, Caroline, to take his daughter away. As his wife mourns the missing piece in their apparently perfect lives, can David prevent his painful secret from pulling his family apart?

This is a hugely readable novel - I could hardly put it down. An obviously emotive subject - and one that makes you think about your own reactions to people who aren't "normal". It is the huge and dreadful secret at the heart of the novel, which makes you keep reading, I was desperate to find out when and if the secret would become known. I did feel the Author " let David off" a bit - but there was so much that was positive in this sad story. I loved the relationship of Caroline and Al - and her determination for Phoebe was inspiring. I loathed David for most of the book, but unexpectedly beagn to warm toward him as he - the character began to get older and I felt became mellower - in a way he was the most changed by what he had done. I also felt less sympathy for Norah as time went on then I expected - but she only became the woman she did because of that one dreadful desicion David made.

I am passing this on at the Birmingham meet because I would like this book to get more readers - plus I know there a few rings going fo this one already.

A fascinating plot. I so badly wanted to hate David for what he did but ultimately I could only pity him - which shows I think how well the characters are written. A very moving story, but the last 100 pages or so dragged a little and I was disappointed by the ending.

To be sent to Safrolistics in Coventry.

Hmm, I'm not quite sure what I thought of this book. On the whole, I enjoyed it, but towards the end, I was just wishing it would get on to the enevitable meeting of Norah and Phoebe. Although that could be down to the fact that since joining bookcrossing, I don't like to read big books....they take too long, and Mt TBR is HUGE!
