I'm intrigued as to what all the fuss is about.

Update: I liked this book so much that I read the sequel, My Friend Leonard. Though Frey's style of writing is fairly informal (lots of "stream of consciousness") he gets his points across. I feel like this would have been a great fiction work, and that it wasn't really necessary to try and pass it off as a biography. I enjoyed it regardless.

This book has arrived safely in Brisbane Australia!

I've just started to read it and it is facinating! A great opening even if it isn't strictly factual.

I like the author's style too, even if it isn't appreciated by all the critics:)

I missed the whole Oprah saga but am reading up on it now.
thanks for sharing, will journal when I'm finished :)

Wow! Even if parts of this are fictional, the story is gripping. It is, in a way, presented as an easy read for females (I read one review that criticised it on this basis…as if writing for a female audience was inherently wrong – go figure). He doesn’t go into details about prostitutes, he writes a lot of positive things about the relationships he’s had, and discusses new feelings of love while in re-hab. This is a gritty novel, when you aren’t in the mood for a really gritty novel.

Putting the cynic in me aside, I thought that the stream of consciousness format was well dealt with. I found the content so interesting; I found myself responding very strongly to the whole journey that James goes through. I have recommended this book to a lot of other people in the few days since finishing it. Thanks so much for offering it as a ring. I’m hooked and ready to seek out his next novel!

Finally finished! I have to say, I didn't really enjoy this book as much as many others did. Like other autobiographies, this one was overly self-indulgent... his writing style made me want to rip up the pages... the "I did this, I did that", made me cringe. And, once again the repetition of words, like I have seen in so many books, made me want scream. I think it's a cheap way to fill up a book. I feel you or I could have written the same way and sold a book. Just my humble opinion... I probably won't recommend to others, I didn't think it was all that great, even if ALL of it WERE true.

Ayn - If there is any book on my TBR, or AVL bookshelf that you would like to read, please let me know so I can repay the favor. I really appreciate you giving me the chance to read this one!
