Water for Elephants: A Novel

Bought this from amazon.com after reading so many glowing posts on the BookCrossing forums.
This was a well-written story that was often uncomfortable to read because of the brutality to both humans and animals. The parallels between the "captive" menagerie animals in the circus and the "captive" old Jacob in the nursing home, and the transitions between flashbacks and current day were particularly well done.
My mom's reading this for her book club next month so she's borrowing my copy.
Yayy!! Received this in the mail yesterday. Thank you, grubsneerg, for being so kind as to send me this book after you and your Mom were done. I will be sending this off to the UK soon so my BC Secret Santa will receive it before Christmas ... but this one has been on my wish list for so long, I may just have to quickly read it before I tuck it in the mail ;)
Thanks again for your generosity and for answering my post on the forum when I was searching for this book. BC'ers are such wonderful people!!

WOW. I loved this book! It was so compelling, I zipped through it in just over a day. The characters were so intriguing; I really loved Jacob and Marlena, Walter and of course Rosie ... and alternately, I hated Uncle Al and August. The story was full of profound challenges; right vs. wrong, love vs. hate ... battles of loyalties and difficulties between classes and stations among the various employees of the circus.
This was an eye-opening look into the world of the traveling circus that I have never thought of before. Not only was the story entertaining, it was also educational. I also really loved it that some of the tidbits in the storyline were based on true events the author discovered when researching for this book.
Overall, an extremely satisfying read. I had been told by many people that this book was a "must read", and now I know why. Thanks again for sharing, grubsneerg!

I absolutly LOVED this book!
Sadly, half way through reading it, I decided to have a look at the Book Group Discussion Questions at the back....! I only looked at three questions, but each one gave away a major plot line...duh! Won't be doing that again!
This will now be sent off to my Not-So-Secret-Valentine's partner.
