Going away? Chances are that Michener has written a book relevant to the place you are visiting. This is exactly how I got into the author: before a trip to Hawaii, I read "Hawaii" and boy did I feel I had done the required reading. Michener is absolutely comprehensive, usually starting his "fiction" way, way, way back in history and bringing the reader up to date while cleverly inserting a few interesting characters to follow along the way.
The writing is decent, with story lines sometime veering into cliche, even vaguely patriarchial or offensive, but you have to admit, the book cover a lot of ground and are a lot easier to read than a history text. For broad, general, entertaining history turn to Michener- but don't expect anything too edgy!
(Cenntennial is about the state of Colorado, my home state.)
Sending to a fellow bookcrosser who is going to the Michener Museum and releasing some of his works!
