I loved the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" and having never read a Stephen King book, I thought I'd start with this one.
This book is really called "Different Seasons" and is a collection of four novellas: "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" (basis of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption"), "Apt Pupil" (basis of the movie "Apt Pupil"), "The Body" (basis of the movie, "Stand By Me"), and "The Breathing Method" (not yet made into a movie).
I read only the Shawshank story and I have to say, the movie is much better than the book. It's more linear, the characters make more sense, and the suspense is better. This story is narrated completely by the character Red, who jumps back and forth in the story and goes off on tangents almost as if it's a stream-of-consciousness tale.
Perhaps Stephen King was going for the conversational tone, perhaps not. In any case, I'm glad I read it, but it didn't inspire me to read the others.
