Kenneth mac Alpin: The man who made and named Scotland.

Norse-Slayer and nationbuilder, Kenneth, son of Alpin mac Eochaidh, King of Galloway, was the warrior hero and visionary who brought together the ancient kingdoms of Alba, Dalriada, Strathclyde and Galloway to create the country of Scotland.

Yet his vision was wider still. He dreamed of a great coming together of all the Celtic people, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Cornish and Manx, united against the Norse and the Anglo-Saxon invaders.

Fighting not only his country's enemies but also the fractious, obstinate wilfulness of his own people, his legacy was a nation, with its own patron saint, the apostle Andrew, that would endure from the ninth century to the present day.

Journal Entry 6 by Schneefee from Hagen, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Sunday, February 10, 2008
Okay, I've given up meanwhile. The problem definitely is NOT the story, which I think is really gorgeous, it's Nigel Tranters quite complicated style.
I'm quite busy at work at the moment and I already know that it won't change till may or even june. When I come home somewhen between 20:00 and 22:00 I'm obviously not in the mood to fight myself through a Tranter but prefer some light entertainment like chick-lit or maybe an audiobook.
Thanks for sharing anyway, DA-Cameron, I will definitely keep this series in mind! But I don't want to block all these books any longer, since it's not just Kenneth, but also 4 more Tranter-books waiting to be read afterwards.

I've already PMt rotewoelfin.

Picked it up today :)

I'm so sorry - but I have the same problem as Schneefee - can't concentrate on this book, and I assume it would take me half a year to finish it... So I'm going to sent it to the next station - hope it will find a more motivated reader!

Arrived together with Macbeth and HighKings and Vikings. I hope it will be better than Druid sacrified which I stopped reading after less than 1/3

I think it is the same with me, but I was brave. I just skipped the pages with this descriptions of battles in hole lenghth, but all together it took me a forthnight to read. But I leaned a lot about Scotland and its early history.
As noone is in line after me, I will hold the book until I have read (or give up) with the other three or get a note from DA-Cameron to send it back separately.
