Laurie's kidnapping at a young age plays a key role in this book. After such a trauma, the fact that she had shut down and blocked things out seemed perfectly reasonable to me! Seeing all that she had bottled up begin to seep out of her and the impact it had on those around her made for an interesting and suspenseful read.
