I Wish, I Wish

I absolutely love this book! It is short, sweet and simple. It was published in 1957. It is a paperback whose paper is so soft and old it is almost like turnig pages of fabric. There are water stains pages are beyond yellow and the staples that hold it together are rusty red instead of shiny grey or silver that they should be. Still, despite all that, I LOVE THIS BOOK!
It is a cute story about a little girl named Fransesca who lives in Florence Italy. Fransesca loves the art gallery and loves watching an old American matron painting miniature versions of the great works of art in the Galleria Pitti. She wishes for a painting like that.
One day on Fransesca's musings she finds a beautiful silky haired cat with an amazing pendant. She cares for the cat in a basket at home until the cat gives birth to a solitary kitten. The kitten is even more precious than the cat, but both are adorable as they follow Fransesca about the streets along the Arno River. Fransesca wishes she may keep one, but her mother insists she find their owner.
They chase butterflies with her, walk the streets with her, and stroll the galleria with her. None of the people Fransesca talk to own the beautiful cat and her unique pendant. Everyday the cats follow her to the Galleria and wait for her outside.
It is on one of these daily visits that Fransescas adventures lead her to the answer to her wishes.
I think I am just as taken by the illustrations in this book as I am by the cute story. Though the inks used are only shades of black, the artist captures my imagination vividly. The fun scribbly strokes and bold lines are so youthful and fun. Fransescas big dark eyes and sweet little smile are endearing despite her flat dimensions. I love art like this, genuine, sweet, simple and pretty.
I hope to see this book travel far with bookcrossing. Perhaps I can even pair it with a ATC trade because of the miniature paintings the American makes. I am definitely going to look for an original way to share this book in Bookcrossing...that is for sure.
