I picked this up today from the OBCZ at Coffee Republic in Aylesbury today - this one was unregistered so thought I'd better take it home with me :o)

Synopsis
Set in New England mainly and London partly, "On Beauty" concerns a pair of feuding families - the Belseys and the Kipps - and a clutch of doomed affairs. It puts low morals among high ideals and asks some searching questions about what life does to love. For the Belseys and the Kipps, the confusions - both personal and political - of our uncertain age are about to be brought close to home: right to the heart of family.

Hmmmm I thought this book started well, but then for me it didn't seem to go anywhere so I gave up at page 100. I liked the way that Zadie described people and the characters seemed interesting, but I started to feel like it was a chore reading it.

What planning! This happened to arrive when I was visiting Lloyd in Weston-super-Mare. I look forward to reading this, but probably won't take it back to Glasgow with me as I see to be reading a lot of froth in contrast to my academic work.

This wasn't quite what I was expecting but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Lots of rich observations on family life and well-drawn characters. Bittersweet and funny.
