From Genevieve's store of books she was giving away.

I absolutely love this book. It blends some pretty realistic fantasies kids have, such as running away from home and surviving in some exotic place, with some more fantastical elements. While these more fantastic elements might grate with some readers, I think it's done in such an organic way--the characters all admit that Venice has a magic about it, so they don't think anything of some of the more extreme stories--that it's easy to accept. The characters are all very engaging as well, particularly Victor; I really want to know what his story is!

Got in the mail today, thanks for the trade! I've read Funke's Inkheart (and Inkspell) and enjoyed them, so I'm looking forward to reading this.

I really enjoyed this book. Funke is a true storyteller, and this book has such a marvelous fairy tale quality to it. I thought it seemed a little bit rushed towards the end, but it was wrapped up nicely. Definitely a book I'd recommend to others, and a book I'd love to read aloud as well!

I liked this story quite a bit when I read it several years ago, though I didn't like it nearly as much as I liked Funke's Dragonrider and Inkheart.

It will be released in about a week at the big Texas Library Association Conference to be held in Houston, Texas.
