For a popular book that you see being read on the train all the time, this was excruciatingly slow to get started. The book could easily have been condensed into half, nay, a third of the size, and I think that using the daughter as historian/narrator was a bad idea. The majority of the book is the father's backstory, told to his daughter in person and through letters, written in the first person. It would have made sense and been far more involving to have followed him having the experiences, instead of telling everything post-events.
The horrible, contrived first half of the book, where the father would only tell his story to the daughter when they were in exotic locations, was (in my opinion) just the author showing off how well-travelled she is.
The relatively exciting ending made me feel that my time wasn't totally wasted... but it was a near thing. This book is definitely not a keeper for me.
