3 journalers for this copy...
An interesting story of a man who falls in love for the first time at the age of ninety. His obsession is sad and yet compelling. Will give to OneMorePage when I see her next.

Yay! Thank you so much Beagle2 for tracking me down at the coffee shop (even though I was totally distracted by Room mom chores and unruly children!!) I have been looking forward to this book for ages, what a treat!
OK I get that Marquez is a master. I get the beauty of his words. Truly, truly, I do. And I am not, by nature, a prude. But still.....
EEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW
This man gave me the heebie-jeebies. As he detailed his sex life through his 90 years - one prostitute after another, not to mention the maid he "mounted" from behind as she cleaned his house - only to want to cap off his life with a night with a child virgin. Ick. All I could think was ick, ick, ick.
I mean, I can tolerate a lot for the sake of literature. But let's face it, this is basically a story of rape, and even though I wanted to believe that in the end he would redeem himself and exhibit true love for the young girl, I could not get past my revulsion to find out.
Now a literature student would say I have sacrificed literature to the story, and that may be so. Still - life is short, and I don't have time to read what I love. So there is certainly no time for what I can't even stomach.
With that rousing non-reccommendation, I thank Beagle2 for sharing, and I am sending this off to Carynpic, who has this book on her wish list. Hope she likes it more than me!!
