With all the hype that this book got, I was expecting something magnificent - I think it hit a bit from the mark. Don't get me wrong, it was a good read, kept me entertained and was an original plot that kept you guessing, it just didn't give me the WOW factor.

The story is quite simple - it's England during the Peninsula War. Practical magic has died out, but there are a lot of theoretical ones. The greatest of these, Mr Norrell, starts doing spells and driving the other theoretical magicians out of business. Then comes Mr Strange, a natural magician, who starts off as Norrell's apprentice, but soon outstrips the master. With fairy servants, bringing people back from the dead, mysterious houses and propecies spouted by tattooed vagabond, they suddenly find that magic has returned with a vengance!!

It was a good story - the half life that Mrs Pole lives is a great twist on the 'deal with the devil' and I loved the perpetual darkness bit (I won't spoil it for you!!). It is a very heavy book though!! Not the sort of thing that is easy to carry around and read as you go.

Hope you like it.
