I don't think I am anywhere near clever enough to explain why this book is so brilliant. But if I had to do that 'which book would you take on a desert island with you?' gig, it would be this one. Also, due to the middle story, 'Ghosts', I discovered Walt Whitman, and Walden.

Opening line of City of Glass:
'It was a wrong number that started it, the telephone ringing three times in the dead of night, and the voice on the other end asking for someone he was not.'

Lovely, lovely, lovely!

The unstoppable Mr Auster arrived this morning from smashing BC'er YokoSpungeon in London, and I can't wait to start reading. Thanks again so much Ali...with a bit of luck Billy will come a-calling for you on Monday!

Hurrah!

Absolutely engrossing.

It's been a long time since I was this absorbed by a book, and longer still since I got genuine chills just from reading. These mysteries pull you down deep, they're as obsesssing for the reader as for the characters within them...whether that comes down to threading together clues or trying to disentangle relationships.

I think you can get out of this book as much as you're prepared to put in...you can read them as 'straight-forward' (although I found them to be anything but) metaphysical detective stories or something much, much more...they reminded me very much of those 'Choose Your Own' adventure books I was so fond of as a child.

This is probably incredibly geeky to admit, but I actually went on-line and printed out maps of NY so I could plot some of Quinn's walks...I don't want to give anything away, so I won't upload a journal pic of my map (much as I desperately want to have my odd-boditty publicly acknowledged), but if any future or past readers would like to see, I'd be happy to email them a copy.

As with the New York Trilogy itself, however, my results were intriguingly inconclusive...:O)

I also found a very interesting link to a 'hidden' Paul Auster interview, that he mysteriously wasn't keen on having published...

Now en route to BC'er Ateehee as part of an Austerically transatlantic trade.

I hope you enjoy them as I much as Ali and I have.

Received the book and the lovely bookmark. I enjoyed Leviathan so much I'm out to read all Paul Auster's novels. If you haven't seen the film Smoke, written by Auster, it's worth renting.
