Please let me give this 11 stars. Please? Oh go on? I gave The Republic of Love 10 stars and this outstrips that by a country mile. Two country miles!
This explanation simplifies what happens in the novel, it excludes all the elaborate detail of fine tapestry but basically put: Reta's daughter Norah leaves university and sits silently on the corner of the street with a sign round her neck that says "GOODNESS". Reta searches herself and the people around her for a reason as to why Norah has retreated from the world so dramatically.
As ripe and bulging with juice as the fattest mango on the tree. Pluck it and see for yourself.

This had such a good review I had to take it.
This was a very thought provoking book. It was not a book to 'enjoy' so much as to absorb and meditate about. I would read more of Carol Shields.
