For me, the most vivid characters in this novel are Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli. The choices they make from the choices available to them shape their lives and the lives of their two children.

Yet 'fate' also plays a part---whether in the sign of a wreck or simply a chance meeting.

Loved most of the prose...the descriptions of meals served & the importance of these is well expressed...especially as in the building of a new family & a new community in the United States.

Gogol doesn't seem a very real character to me. He seems so unaware of himself & his surroundings. He says at one point of Maxine, a girlfriend, that "She has the gift of accepting her life" p. 138

Certainly not everyone can have this particular gift, but there's evidence in the novel that both his parents come to that---they both grow--& that his sister may have found the gift. I liked the ending anyway...perhaps Gogol will find that gift too.

This was a truly enjoyable walk in another persons culture. I enjoyed meeting the people in the book and learning their attitudes and what motivated them. I feel it gave me a much better understanding of them and their culture. Every page was enjoyable unwinding in a quiet way yet covering a considerable amount of time in the lives of the people in the book
