From the back cover:

"In California's Sacramento Valley, six people meet once a month to discuss Jane Austen's novels. They are ordinary people, neither happy nor unhappy, but all wounded in different ways, all mixed up about their lives and their relationships. Over the six months they meet marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and, under the guiding eye of Jane Austen, some of them even fall in love ..."

A good read - there is a section which summarises Austen's novels, and what other people, such as Rudyard Kiping, CS Lewis and JK Rowling, have said about Austen's work.

Great book!

In some ways even a bit scandalous, but honest the way Austen would like it to be.

Really built up the complexity of the characters, which is so huge to me...but then I felt a bit like I got all involved in the characters and their history, but their personal plots rarely got too exciting and kind of fell flat.

I think the best parts were just the references to Austen, and seeing what stories made each person who they are.

Really glad ukcanus shared this book with me!

Think will read after finishing up my current book.

At the beginning of this novel, I really wasn't impressed and I hated the characters. Secondly, despite loving British things, I've read one Jane Austen novel and couldn't really get into what the club members were discussing. I put the book down after the May chapter and resolved not to pick it up again.

However- it's not good to be a quitter, and since I still wanted to see the film after reading the book (for comparison, of course), I told myself "You pick that book up where you left off, young lady! You weren't raised to be a quitter!"

Ahem.

Well, it got better, I must say. Some of the characters aren't to my liking but I *am* adoring Grigg and even possibly Allegra, too.

This will be set on reserve for a book box of "well-traveled" books.

Not my favorite book this year. I liked the characters, but couldn't follow the plot and didn't find it that funny. I love Jane Austen and have read all her books.

I liked this book, but realize I haven't read enough Jane Austen to really make it impactful. Of course, you don't have to be familiar with Austen's work to enjoy the friendship angle of this story, but I think it would help. I enjoyed it more when they were discussing a book I'd read.
