This week's Times book at W H Smiths.

Synopsis from Amazon:
One of the most successful, influential and acclaimed travel books of recent years. At the age of twenty-two, William Dalrymple left his college in Cambridge to travel to the ruins of Kublai Khan's stately pleasure dome in Xanadu. This is an account of a quest which took him and his companions across the width of Asia, along dusty, forgotten roads, through villages and cities full of unexpected hospitality and wildly improbable escapades, to Coleridge's Xanadu itself. At once funny and knowledgeable, In Xanadu is in the finest tradition of British travel writing. Told with an exhilarating blend of eloquence, wit, poetry and delight, it is already established as a classic of its kind.

Enjoyable travel book by an author who was a young University undergrad at the time. The naivelty and sense of Cambridge superiority does show through at times, but there is also a freshness and an ability to put up with awful conditions that goes with his age. The journey took place in 1986 and I had to check periodically that it was that recent, there was such an old-fashioned flavour to the earlier parts of the book as he went through the Middle East. On the other hand it was remarkable (if true) that he was able to get through the length of Iran and then China including a large section forbidden to foreigners. Despite the humour and easy style I did find the continual harping on the difficult travel conditions got a little wearying and most enjoyed the odd bits of historical research relating to the monuments he passed.
