The story is set at a liberal arts college and is "a satire of mass culture and the numbing effects of technology" with a chemical accident plot point. It feels like this book would probably be interesting to people in the academic / university culture, environmentalists, and supporters/critics of our management of technology. White Noise won the 1985 National Book Award and DeLillo is the author of Underworld, a 1997 bestseller.
