From the back cover:
"England, 1930s. Christopher Banks has become the country's most celebrated detective, his cases the talk of London society. Yet one unsolved crime has always haunted him: the mysterious disappearance of his parents, in Old Shanghai, when he was a small boy. Moving between London and Shanghai of the inter-war period, When We Were Orphans is a story of memory, intrigue and the need to return."
I read this very quickly over the christmas period. It's a thrilling story with an extremely interesting main character who somehow both confirmed to, and yet simultaneously defied all my expectations of him throughout the book. The twist at the end of the story is, I'd say, totally unguessable though I may be proved wrong by some other reader. I never saw it coming anyway :-)

I found the start very promising. Ishiguro has a very natural and flowing style. The story has an intriguing set-up, but half way its starts to falter and I found the ending anti-climactic and rushed.
Many details in the story are told 'backwards', meaning you have to keep reading all the time to find out what's going on. It's a good way to get into the story, but after a while it bit much.
In will keep a look-out for Ishiguro's other books.

Book brought out to me by my sister-in-law, visitng from Edinburgh. I didn't really enjoy it much - I thought it had too strong a sense of unreality for a detective story.
