I'm afraid I was quite disappoined by this book which has been quite heavily hyped. The opening and the part related to the daughter were insightful and well observed, the other parts less so. I found the actual plot almost impossible to follow, I'm afraid I still like a book to have a beginning a middle and an end. Maybe the problem was that not only was the plot infuriatingly inconsequential, but I didn't actually care about any of the characters. And you do have to care, a bit, don't you?

Well Sarahsally didn't like this at all, but Triggerfish loved it, so will be interesting to see what I think of this book. Watch this space.

Well, I didn't think this was the best thing since sliced bread, but there were parts I really liked. I thought Magnus' feelings of guilt were so well written. You felt absolutely sick with shame and guilt and fear on his behalf. I also loved the very last pages of the section called The Beginning where Alhambra describes her life, but it's actually bits from films. I agree with sarahsally that at times I wasn't quite sure what was going on, but it wasn't as confusing as Hotel World by ALi Smith.
Will bring along to next meet up.

picked this up at the BookCrossers Meeting in Edinburgh Wed 11 April 07. This has been recommended to me a few times now so I am keen to read it! Though I think I may have a copy somewhere... I am not sure where. Anyway having another copy to send off to another eager reader seems a jolly good idea!

I shall mark it as available in case anyone wants to swap for it!

Updating my BookCrossing records and finding to my dismay there’s heaps more odd gaps than I had realised, and this is one of them. No review in my notes so scribbles from memory instead...

A chum had very enthusiastically recommended this book to me so I was interested, but when it came to it I found this deeply unsettling and didn’t finish it. I hate not finishing books but eventually realised I just didn’t want to pick it up again and felt then it really was time to move it on.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

My records show I wild released this at the most wonderful local café in my area, Renroc Café on the 25 July 08. I know I was in a frenzy to move books on at the time but am surprised that I didn’t manage to get this journal entry done at the time. Change over time from one academic dairy to another may have confused the issue?

Picked up from the bookshelf in the basement of "Always Sunday" in Edinburgh today. Seems to have travelled a bit since the last journal entry. :-)
