This is an amazing book. It is a Newberry Medal winner. It is appropriate for mature 5th graders and up. There is violence and disturbing behavior which will definately upset young or especially sensitive children.

Jonas lives in a perfect world. Everything is under control. In his world there is no fear, no pain or war. Everyone is his community is assigned a role so that no one has to make any choices.

When Jonas is picked on his 12th birthday to recieve special training from the Giver his is life is turned upside down. Jonas must learn all of the painful memories that his people have been protected from for many years.
