BOB:
Paul Gallico posesses a unique talent for presenting fairy tales in modern dress. A reader must have grown old and crusty if he has closed his mind to so much charm.

In this magical story of the London 'daily' who goes to Paris to buy a Dior dress, Mrs Harris starts in the role of Cinderella and emerges as fairy godmother to at least three of the sophisticated people she meets and vanquishes in the House of Dior. She makes their dreams come true as she has made her own.

This, assuredly, is a kind of writing which snaps its fingers at the more pedestrian critics.

First published in 1957.

A delightful tale from a master storyteller. A char sees all, indeed. She faced down all those strangers with the open friendliness that is her nature & made friends of all them furriners into the bargain. The desire for a Dior gown, the single-mindedness with which she approached her quest & the gown's ultimate adventure broke my heart a little. What a woman is Mrs Harris!
