I liked McCall Smith's other books, namely the Mma Ramotswe ones, but I couldn't for the life of me get into this one. I didn't warm to the main character who kept bringing up philosophical questions, pondered them for a second, sigh, and then say: this would be a great question to discuss during our Sunday Philosophy Club, but we never seem to find the time. She lives in a huge house with housekeeper and works part time as an editor, and still complains that people don't understand just how busy she is, when the story revolves around her solving cross word puzzles and drinking coffee while chatting to her opinionated housekeeper. I had little patience for this character and in turn the story (what did the reporter show up for?) and its loose ends. I'll let it travel on now.

A nice and easy read, however I have to agree somehow with verenka. Isabel, the main character, is an old spinster (even if she was married once) who is obsessed with her own life, that must not be disturbed by anyone. I have the feeling, that her Sunday Phiosophy Club never has sat together so far and that it is in Isabel's imagination only.
Besides that I didn't like Cat too much - especially because of her love for Toby. Toby clearly had to be unfaithful - it was very predictable. Jamie was too good to be true, but it is nice to think about the possibility of meeting such a kind and considerate young man.
The book will be handed over to concertina8 during the next Ladies' Night.

I got this from blondgeek47 last week.
Hmmm this is the 2nd McCall Smith book I've read and I'm still not too impressed
It was a nice easy read but have to agree that Isabel Dalhousie was an odd character
Thanks for sharing though :)
