A good historical novel set where I live, the West Coast of NZ. A pretty rough, prejudiced time in history.

Yay, another kiwi book! I can't wait to get started on this one and Kokopu Dreams. I am feeling homesick for NZ already. ;o)
Thanks bilbi for sending them on to me and for the beautiful photos.Seems like you live in a very nice area.

I finally found the time - thanks to the absence of bookrings - to read this book. I have to admit, at first I was a bit worried it would be just another romance novel (which I hate), but it turned out to be a charming little story about the life of European settlers in 19th century New Zealand. Of course, there is a love-story involved, but it's luckily not the only salient point of the novel.
This book is certainly no intricate masterpiece, but it is an entertaining read for lazy afternoons. Thank you, VeganMedusa, for giving me chance to read it!
I will try to figure out a way to get it out to more people.

Journal Entry 9 by Triggerfish from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, June 5, 2007
Well, I was disappointed by this book and gave up after 26 pages! I just did not care for Kelly's simplistic writing style and was cringing at the dialogue. I flicked through book to see if things improved but it was almost all dialogue. I have so many books that I am keen to read that I couldn't justify wasting any more time on this one.
Oh well, I guess I can't expect to enjoy every books that arrives via bookring/rays!
Have PMed for next address.

This arrived here safely today... Not clear if it goes to iliotropio or Nikel next? A few other rings to get through before tackling this one, but it looks to be a quick read. Thanks so much for making it available and adding me in.

Different strokes for different folks and all that - although I know Triggerfish and I agree on some books, we don't agree on this one. I really loved this, and sped through it in a day and a half. (It would have been quicker but I did have to work too). Some things about it reminded me of the film by Jane Campion - the Piano Lesson (?not sure of the title) - I hope that doesn't sound like a cliche, but the end of the world bleakness, the drenching rain, the roughness and self-righteousness all felt reminiscent of images from that film (which I haven't seen since it came out, so my memory may have warped it a bit).
I felt the characters were well portrayed, the imagery strong, and it made a very good read. Thanks so much for making this available. I'll be sending it on to iliotropio unless I hear otherwise.

Journal Entry 22 by alkaline-kiwi from Auckland, Auckland Province New Zealand on Monday, August 25, 2008
Wow, what an enjoyable book! I started it yesterday afternoon and finished it just before.

I liked the historical West Coast setting (which even though I have lived on the West Coast all my life prior to my recent move up North I haven't read that many West Coast set books) and found the characters interesting. I got right into it from the first page (probably why it didn't take me that long to read) and will be on the look out for other books by this author.

Thanks HeyEcho for sending it to me. I think I will see if my stepmum wants to read this and send it down to her. Or will take it along to the meetup on Sunday.

A great book.

Journal Entry 24 by kenrover at Oamaru, Otago New Zealand on Saturday, November 19, 2011
A well written view of the lives of some key characters from differing backgrounds in the post gold-rush days of the West Coast. Clever weaving of the characters. Gave some great insight on life in those days and the people who made the Coast their life.
