Heb dit boek om twee redenen een tijdje geleden gekocht. Er werd bij Oprah over gesproken en toevallig die keer keek ik en ik wilde mijn Engels ophalen. Nog steeds staat het boek in de kast om een keer gelezen te worden. Vandaar eerst anderen en dan kom ik wel. Meer informatie:

Hoi kaylihi. Het boek is vandaag bij mij aangekomen.
Ik heb erg veel zin om het te gaan lezen.

Ik vind dit een boek dat eigenlijk (net als het dagboek van Anne Frank)verplichte leeskost moet zijn op alle scholen in de wereld.
Ik heb al vaker films gezien of boeken gelezen over de holocaust maar ik blijf me toch weer iedere keer verbazen over de gruwelijke dingen die zijn gebeurd. Dit soort boeken of films zijn voor mij een goede manier om te relativeren en stil te staan bij het feit dat ik in vrede leef en veel dingen heb om dankbaar voor te zijn.
Ik was erg nieuwsgierig naar dit boek omdat ik de aflevering van Oprah waar kaylihi het over had ook had gezien. Ik ben blij dat ik het heb gelezen.

Ik heb dit boek gisteren in één ruk uitgelezen! Ik was bang dat als ik het neer zou leggen, ik niet meer verder zou willen lezen.
Natuurlijk weet ik wel dat er in de Tweede Wereldoorlog gruwelijke dingen zijn gebeurd, maar om het dan zo te lezen is het toch wel schokkend!
Ik vind ook dat dit boek verplichte literatuur zou moeten zijn! Ik wil wel meer weten over meneer Wiesel.

Lag gisteren in de bus. Dank Jordanne voor het opsturen. Ik ben denk ik snel toe aan dit boek. De stapel is niet zo hoog!
Een indringend boek. Ik vond het een opeenstapeling van afschuwelijke gebeurtenissen. Ik wilde het uitlezen, maar af en toe wilde ik bijna niet verder. Maar ja, dat wilde de schrijver vast ook niet. Ik sluit me volledig aan bij Cahira en Jordanne dat dit boek verplicht moet zijn op scholen. Opdat het een waarschuwing blijft, want afschuwelijke dingen gebeuren ook vandaag de dag nog overal ter wereld.
Het boek gaat door naar Appelejan, maar ik ga eerst op vakantie, dus dat wordt begin mei. Ik hoop dat dat oké is.

het blijft me fascineren. hoe mensen in beesten kunnen veranderen en hoe iedereen daar in meegaat. hoe de joden maar niet konden geloven wat hun te wachten stond omdat het zo afschuwelijk was dat ze het niet als waarheid konden aannemen. het is een bloedstollend boek . nooit mag er vergeten worden wat er gebeurt is en we mogen nooit onze ogen sluiten voor wat er nu nog steeds gebeurt onder onze neuzen. maar de horror en vooral ook de schaalgrote van de holocaust kan bijna niet geevenaard worden. Het blijft me trekken dit soort boeken. gewoon omdat ik nog steeds niet kan geloven dat mensen elkaar dit aandoen. dit boek gaat nu naar afraberg.

This is a great book! A terrible story of course, but very well written.
It's always shocking to read/see what people have done and still do to each other. This book is autobiographic, but it's almost written as by a witness. Every time the writer is astonished by the horrible things happening around him.

A very moving & well written book. There was a sparseness to the prose that somehow fit the disturbing events it portrayed.
I recently read a children's novel that dealt with some of the same things & I would recommend it also: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne.

Got the book today! It might take a couple of weeks before I start it, though.
It was a small book that had a lot to say, simple but powerful... The thing that stood out most to my eyes in this particular book, compared to other accounts of the Holocaust I have read, is how the author described little things such as the beautiful spring weather and the little gardens in the Auschwitz camp, how cruelly ironic this contrast is, among all these unspeakable horrors, etc. - tiny details here and there that highlighted the despair and lack of sense in what humans do to each other... Thank you for including me in this ring.

Powerful, enlighting read . I prefer not to read war stories but this I needed to read. Teaches a lot about the human condition and the astonshing pain we are capable of inflicting on other humans and the incredible capacity we have for survival. Thank you so much for sharing this book.

This is an amazing book. While it is a rather slim volume, it is full of moving text. The physical brutality that Elie and the others had to endure (or die trying) is heart wrenching and loathsome. The feelings of self-preservation that were brought to the surface show true human emotions at their rawest. I think this book should be required reading and I'm glad Oprah chose it as one of her book club selections to introduce it to a wider audience. I am pming ealasaidmae for an address to pass it on.

I had read this before, in high school. I wanted to read this version since it has been re-translated and corrected by Marion and Elie Wiesel. It was just as disturbing the second time. I don't think I'll be reading it again.
