John Irving is one of my favorite authors and I always wanted to read this one since I saw the movie. I received this copy from a reader in Minnesota via www.paperbackswap.com
I don't have time to read this right now since I'm going to be very busy with school this year, so I'm turning it into a bookray so others can enjoy it!

Received from literarylover today, thank you! I am powering through two other bookrings at the moment, and will be starting on this one shortly.
Finished! This is the longest book I have read in a while at 598 pages. I was keen to read this as people who have seen the movie tell me the story is terrific, plus it is on the "1001 books to read before you die" list. I admit I initially struggled to get into the book, however once a certain stage in the story hit I was engrossed and found it hard to put down. Loved all of the characters from St Cloud's, especially Homer and Dr Larch. Keen to read some of his other works now.
Thanks to literarylover for sharing this book!
Have PM'ed the next participant, awaiting response.
ADDIT 14/08/08: Mailing off to Valmue tomorrow.

My bad, I thought I had already posted this off to Valmue, until I discovered the package sitting forlornly in the boot of my car yesterday, eek! Book has now continued on its way to Germany from Oz.

I received the book today, thank you briz-cowgirl. I am looking forward reading it.
12.10.2008: In finished the book this week. In the beginning it took me some time to get into the story but then I really enjoyed it. I liked following not only the life of the main caracters but also of other caracters, like Melony.
In order to reveal not everything of the story to those who haven't read the book yet, I write the following in white. If you want to read it, just press the left mouse button and go over the space below.
I was a little bit wondering that Wally didn't say much about that Angel was Homer's and Candy's son, although he knew it before he was told. And also after Angel and Wally had been told the truth, the relationship of the four didn't seem to change. On the other hand i liked it that way, it makes the story a sort of fairy tale.
15.10.2008: I sent the book to Leukonoe on October, 12th.

A bit delayed - sorry! Have started to read this today and already the first pages are very irvingish. Thanks for sending!
Journal Entry 9 by Leukonoe from Berlin (irgendwo/somewhere), Berlin Germany on Thursday, November 20, 2008
Halfway through the book now, and I like it very, very much. I love the passage where Dr. Larch thinks about playing god and concludes that this is good, as leaving things to chance can sometimes be the work of the devil. I liked the movie very much, but the book is even better.
PM'ed Antigone1 today.
01.12.2008: no response from Antigone1 yet, PM'ed once again. Book is in its last quarter.

The last 100 pages of that book I had to read in one long session last night, as I really wanted to know the end. Very nice book. The love between Wally, Homer and candy, however, seems quite realistic to me, but some little things in the plot seem very unrealistic: I don't buy that somebody who gave up practical medicine for apple farming will spend all that tremendous money on medical journals like The Lancet etc. to keep himself up-to-date. And I also don't believe that a poor black girl will not like to marry a well-off boy she obviously loves and run away instead. But that's not what you read Irving for - he's best in those little philosophical sentences scattered around the book. Thanks for sharing, it will travel on today!

Thanks for passing on this book! I look forward to reading it.
The book arrived yesterday, thanks!
March 15th
I finally finished the book. It's a nice book to read although it took me a bit longer than usual to finish a book, but the tiny script and amount of pages could be a reason for that.
As said, I like the book especially since it's not the happy ending you wish for when you're about halfway throught the book, but still the ending is a statisfying one.
I already have the next ones address so it will be in the mail today or tomorrow.

I really enjoyed this one. I started off quite slowly with it, I couldn't seem to read more than 50 pages at a time but towards the end I was glued to it and could not put it down.
It didn't end how I expected, which is always a bonus. I like to be surprised.
Vekiki no longer wants the book so I'm now waiting for an address from 24-7-365Reader so I can post the book on.

This turned up yesterday, thanks caroley for the pretty notecard. I have 1 and half books in front of this, but I seem to be reading quite quickley these days, so I will get to it as soon as I can. Thanks for sharing :)
I really wanted to love this book, but I am sorry to say I just can't get into it, I have really tried, I have tried reading in the garden, reading in bed, reading while waiting for the kids at their various clubs, reading a chapter at a time, reading a page at a time but with no luck I just can't get in to it at all, even though it has lot's of positive reviews, but that's the joy of bookcrossing; the chance to try new books some you love and some you don't! I have a huge TBR at the mo so I have decided to send it on to the next person.
Reserved - waiting for the address of the next person.
Thanks for sharing and giving people to chance to try new stuff!

Arrived in today's mail. Thank you 24-7-365Reader, and literarylover. I have one rather dense bookring ahead of it, but shouldn't be too long.
I loved this book - nearly as much as last year's favourite read "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by the same author.
I've PMed Withoutwings but as her profile says she's swamped at the moment and she hasn't been active for 9 months I'm going to skip her and request an address from eeyore75.

Rec'd last week - thanks!
Will read after I finish my current book. I'm a kinda slow reader, but I'll try not to hold onto it for too long.

Sorry the book arrived faster than I got a chance to journal it. Skipped Queniene because never received a response after several tries. I liked the book, but it's always hard for me to read a book after I've seen the movie, so I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it earlier.

I think the person that had this before me forgot to make release notes. The book is next TBR after my current read.
After several failed attempts to get into this book I decided it's better off somewhere else. Dropped in the mail to minesayn this morning. Happy reading!
Received from mrsboknows...thanks for sharing your book with me. I will read and pass on. Thanks, too, for all the little bookcrossing goodies! They are appreciated and will be used. Again, thanks!
Took a while to read this, but well worth the read. It is the story of Dr. Larch and Homer Wells...the physician who teaches his orphan to become a doctor himself. But it is more than that..it is the "rules" of life that we play by, ie. the cider house rules.

I read this book back in 2006 and wrote the following:
I began this book about a week ago - it's pretty long (although not that long for an Irving novel; his books always seem to be an easy 500+ pages) but it was fantastic.
The love triangle between Wally, Homer, and Candy was beautiful and terrible. After Homer had moved into the Worthington's home, I made the prediction that Wally would disappear for a time (through World War II as it turned out) and Homer and Candy would create a fetus, but I thought that Homer would be forced to abort it before Wally came home again.
It didn't quite work out that way.
While the plot was never a surprise - it was obvious from chapter one that Homer would never escape from St. Cloud's, try as he might - there were certain curves here and there that were completely surprising and I never would have predicted.
SPOILERS HIGHLIGHT TO READ
-Dr. Larch's reconstruction of Fuzzy Stone's life so that Homer would be able to assume his name
-Homer, Candy, Wally and Angel all living together for fifteen years
-Mr. Rose and the incestuous relationship with his daughter
-Melony's return to Homer Wells after she hadn't seen him for years wasn't quite the way I expected, not at all. I was disappointed that she was a lesbian, though - that just seemed so predictable and formula.
Great book. I've never seen the movie, but now I think I'd like to.
