Listened to this ages ago as a book-on-tape. Enjoyed the language and the "magical" component of the story. Would have liked to have given a few of the characters a good shaking, but that is just me. Modern classic IMHO.
Got this from a library book sale, so it's been around the block.
*update 2/10/03-has been promised in trade to froggiepopple.

This is one of the best love stories I have ever read. It sure beats those trashy romance novels.

Just started this one! So far so good! =)
I'll update my entry after I finish reading it...

It was an okay book. From the position Tita and Pedro are in from the beginning, you can't really blame them for their actions. It's always interesting to see the differences in culture and eras. All the recipes were interesting though a lot more time-consuming than anything I'll ever try to make! =) Overall, it didn't knock my socks off but I didn't hate it either...

Oooo...this is a small hardcover and just feels so good in my hands. I can't wait to read this, post again and then I will find some neat way of keeping it moving.

Bought another copy of this book at a library book sale today so that I can get this one moving again. I'll also post a journal entry here when I've read it.

EDIT: 2 August 2005
Finally getting around to composing my journal entry for this book. It is a fairly quick read, though it isn't easy for me to decide what to say about it. I enjoyed it, though didn't love it. The characters were at once annoying and delightful, even Rosaura and Mama Elena, who should be the least likable characters. I haven't as much experience with magical realism as I probably should for someone who reads lots of literature in translation, but I understand enough not to question the magic and just accept it. However, there were times when I was just a bit put-off by the silliness of events. Perhaps it is more than I am not all that captivated by the sensual relationship of food and life. For me eating is just something I need to do so that I have enough energy to read.

Received this from a fellow BCer via the BookRelay site. She was kind enough to include a CD of music too! Thanks so much!

I FINALLY got around to reading this book. I was a little let down by the consistency of the story telling, but still enjoyed the read. I got frustrated with Tita and her "I love him" "I don't know if I love him" juggle. I think the author should have made hera stronger woman, for all that she went through.

On the other hand, I did enjoy the 'supernatural' aspect of the way the Tita's emotions and cooking could affect people. Made for some interesting outcomes.

Definitely a different style of writing/story telling. Not a bad little read.
