I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gives a new perspective of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of The West, looking at her back story and detailing how she became the character that we all know and hate from either Frank L Baum's original story, of the 1939 film. In particular it looks at how a person's personality and reputation can be shaped by the events and people that surround them. My only problem with the book (and it is a small one) is that the story is told from the perspective of everyone but Elphaba until the very end, but it doesn't really suffer because of that.

I now have the bookray order sorted. It is as follows:
SallaH (UK)
platypussj (UK)
snufkin81 (South Africa)
eloisamos (Brazil)
bookluver1965 (Canada)
brewski (Canada)
Aisling78 (USA)
Feel free to send the book by surface mail rather than airmail, but please write this in your journal entry, so that everyone knows where the book is. Also, I intend to keep the bookray open, so if anyone new wants to join, they are very welcome, and can be added to the bottom of the list.
I hope everyone enjoys the book as much as I did. I have sent it to SallaH.

Received the book today, will start reading it tomorrow. Yay. :)
Well, I have finished the book and I did enjoy it very much! However, there were a few things that bothered me slightly, namely things that were just left hanging and were never concluded in any way (like what exactly happened to Fiyero's wife and kids, or Shell?)... I'll have to re-watch the Wizard of Oz now! By the way, the musical is fantastic, if anyone is contemplating seeing it, I definitely recommend it! It's very different from the book, but still immensely enjoyable.
Sent Wicked to platypussj today! Enjoy!
Wow! Got it today. I have a couple of rings before this but will do my best to move it on within a month. Thank you, anthonybairdis for this ray, and SallahH for sending it to me. I think I will enjoy ...
It has taken me over a month to read this highly enjoyable book. Snatching a few pages here and there has been quite painful as, if I could, I would have sunk my teeth into it until I had gone from cover to cover. I thought the story was very well told but agree with SallaH, there were a number of threads left hanging that I felt could have been covered in an epilogue, I mean at least give us an idea about Nor (and I would have loved to have known more about Yackle)! However, so much of the story concerns that which is unknown - destiny and predetermination, that the author was perhaps wise not to have tied everything neatly together at the end.
Elphie's character is glorious - I love her!
Thank you so much for the opportunity of reading this book, anthonybairdis. I will definitely read more Maguire.

So sorry I hogged it for so long. Posted to snufkin81 today.
I got this in the post yesterday. Thanks platypussj!
I'm busy with another book at the moment but I'll try to get this one moving again asap.

I enjoyed this a lot! At first I was put off by Maguire's style, but once I got used to it I got totally gripped by the plot. It's very clever, funny and moving too. The characters are fantastic! I'm going to look out for the sequel, Son of a Witch, to find out what happens to Liir and Nor. I'd also like to read the original Frank L. Baum books, although I think I might find them disappointing after reading this.

Both eloisamos and bookluver1965 asked to be skipped, so today I sent this on to brewski. And because it's the beginning of the month I could afford airmail, so hopefully it'll arrive in Canada in a couple of weeks :)
Thanks for sharing this with all of us anthonybairdis, I'm really looking forward to reading this one. Thanks for sending this via airmail snufkin81, it got here so fast!
I'm not finished reading this yet, but I have already found it so engrossing that I nearly forgot to get off the subway this morning at my stop. I had to jump out of my seat and squeeze through the closing doors :)
Yay, I managed to finish this book without missing my subway stop once :)
This was a very enjoyable read which filled in the pre-history of the Oz that Dorothy dropped into. Maguire's take on this was quite entertaining from cover to cover and I really found myself liking Elphaba a lot. Even though I knew what fate she had coming I was sad when it finally happened. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Maguire's work
Now I am ready to pass this on as soon as I get a response from Aisking78 to the PM I sent a few days ago.
