This book was bought many years ago at a public library booksale.
The HeeChee have left signs of their presence all over the universe. Not only their "prayer fans" which sell as exotic suvenirs of the species, but also faster than light ships and examples of other high technology beyond the scope of humankind at the time of this story.
When one family is sent to a Heechee food factory (a ship that converts the atomic materials in asteroids into bioavailable food), they never dreamed that they would discover a child born and raised there, the source of a mysterious madness that has been sweeping humankind at regular intervals, and perhaps even the secrets of the Heechee themselves.
I have read this book a couple times over the years, but unlike nearly everything else I have read, the details of this story always slip away. On the one hand this is sad, because I do enjoy it. On the other hand it is a joy, because I can read it again and again.
