Blurb on back cover says...

"In the Square of a Thousand Winds, snow falls as a sixteen year old Chinese girl beats all-comers at the game of go. One of her opponents is, unknown to her, a young Japanese officer of the occupying power, rigidly militaristic, imbued with the imperial ethic, but far from home and intrigued by this young opponent. Their encounters are like the game itself, restrained, subtle and surprisingly fierce. But as their two stories unfold, the Japanese army moves inexorably through their huge land, in the vanguard of a greater war, leaving blood and destruction in its wake."

Gem of a book - highly moving and captivating. Really enjoyed this.

Should anyone have a problem with this bookring at anytime, please let me know (via PM in the first instance or in the event of a PM not reaching me, via the Bookring forum)so I can co-ordinate matters and keep fellow participants informed.

I received this in the mail today. I'm in the middle of a book at the moment and have my bookclub selection to read before the end of next week but this one will be next and done within a month for sure.

Thanks Jinglefish for sharing!

I really enjoyed this book. I was a little confused at the beginning with the two "I" characters but quickly figured out how the perspective changed from chapter to chapter.

I like stories that Chinese authors write about the time when China was being invaded by the Japanese and the Russians. Events are not "hollywood-ised" and there is no effort to make the reader feel better by softening what happened. The ending was perfect.

It's hard to say what I want to say without spoiling the book for the others!!

I have PMed the next person and am waiting for the mailing address. This will be sent within the next couple of days.

Thanks Jinglefish for sharing this book. If you are interested in reading more about the brutality of the invasion of Japan into China and how one woman lives through it, I recommend Red Sorghum by Mo Yan. I have a copy in my PC if you're interested. It leaves very little to the imagination though.

I thought this book was interesting and I really enjoyed the way the point of view changes from chapter to chapter.
I didn't really see the ending coming, but when it did it was great- I thought it brought everything together really well.
Thanks for sharing this book!

Got the book today, at least I picked it up today, came home and read the whole book :3 The beginning was a little slow, and it took me a couple chapters to figure out who the guy was, but I did get it :P

This book is just utterly fantastic. I'm putting it on my wishlist so that I can own it :3

Jinglefish, I want to say thank you for starting this ring. I've never really read a book like this, and this is my first venture into something new. And ...whee :3 + yayness. I plan to keep an eye out on this author.

Yay! My first bookring ever has made it safely home. Thank you all for taking part and for the positive responses - always a delight when others enjoy the book as well.

I've promised to lend this to a non-BCer friend before deciding what to do with it.
