Synopsis
It's 1985 and Brian Jackson has arrived at university with a burning ambition - to make it onto TV's foremost general knowledge quiz. But no sooner has he embarked on 'The Challenge' than he finds himself falling hopelessly in love with his teammate, the beautiful and charismatic would-be actress, Alice Harbinson. When Alice fails to fall for his slightly over-eager charms, Brian comes up with a foolproof plan to capture her heart once and for all. He's going to win the game, at any cost, because - after all - everyone knows that what a woman really wants from a man is a comprehensive grasp of general knowledge...Starter for Ten is a comedy about love, class, growing-up and the all-important difference between knowledge and wisdom.

Lots of cringing and laughing, often at the same time accompanied my reading this book.
Poor geeky Brian - obsessed with his record collection and the pursuit of useless information escapes from his working class Essex home to a "posh" University and falls in love with Alice the beautiful product of a liberal middle-class home.
The story is essentially the ups and downs of Brian's attempts to get Alice to notice him but, underlying this the story explores the nature of friendship, growing-up, first love and the "joys" of the 1980s.
I think I cringed more than I laughed.
Just on thing, the "right girl" for Brian is just too obviously telegraphed throughout.

Got this at the meetup, have been recommended this by various people, so glad to have grabbed it.
A good book. Brian could be many of the lads I went to uni with, also the Southend references are fun (sister lived near there). The book is well set out, with a UC question at the beginning of each chapter. The characters are believable and there is a nice twist at the end.
It made me think of my first year at uni, and how much you really do change.
Passed on to a friend in St. Andrews.

Fun and easy read, did remind me of some of the guys I went to uni with. A wee bit cheesy in places but interesting UC questions at each chapter.
