The book is about Frey and his time in rehab. It talks about how he dealt with it, how he related to his family and the friends he met while he was there. He also relived his horrible nightmare as an addict. IT kept my attention from beginning to end.

I am not big on a lot of strict rules. I just want everyone to enjoy the book and send it on to the next person in line. One month seems reasonable to me but if you need to take a little longer, that's fine. Remember to PM each other for mail address and PM me if you have any questions or concerns. You know the drill....

List-not in the final order yet since I am still recruiting interested readers.

Received in the post about 1 week ago. Did take awhile getting here but is in perfect shape. Have pm'ed Enidq for address.

I am very anxious to read this book, as I recall all of the controversy about the details initially, and later the revelation that most of the memoir was fabricated.

Fabrication or not this read was very realistic. My late husband had been in a rehabilation center locally for alcoholism in the very early 90's. Much of what was written in this book reminded me of some of the stories he would share about the experience. At times in the book, I laughed, mostly I cried, but whatever the emotion I kept turning those pages to get to the end. I am looking forward to reading My Friend Leonard.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful read. Sorry to have caused you so much worry about the book initially and for the week late journalling. All the best!

Journal Entry 5 by Enidq on Sunday, March 18, 2007
I have gone back and forth on reading this book due to the controversy and finally was curious as to whether it was a good story. Fact or fiction by the second chapter I had a tear running down my face. I have NEVER had that happen. I hope the rest of the book holds on to me. I'm ready for a good ride.

Well I am happy to report that the book managed to keep a good grip on me and I finished it in less than 30 days I see. That is really a record for me and I managed to finish another in between. Over all I would say this is an 8. Intense read and tough at times but you want to know what happens to James.

I too now want to read My Friend Leonard.

Just received this from EnidQ, continuing on its bookring journey. I was working at a bookstore before Oprah made it part of her book club as well as during the controversy about its fictional aspects. I never read it, it was kind of always an 'I want to get to that sometime' kind of read. I've heard good things about it since - and after the controversy the book sold WAY more than before. People said they were just curious. interesting......thanks to acountkel for starting the ring!

Journal Entry 7 by 2of3Rs from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Friday, May 4, 2007
I checked out some of the details of the controversy - Frey originally submitted the manuscript to publishers AS FICTION. THEY were the ones who said it would sell better as a memoir. Hmm. Seems to me that the onus should be on THEM for not fact checking if they were so eager to publish it as a memoir.

I was engrossed from first page to last. The whole 'did the incidents actually occur or not' controversy didn't matter to me at all. The voice of addiction came through . The voice seemed true, the needing, the craving, the Fury....... stunning......

With perhaps a bump in the journey, the book is on its way to boirina in Portugal.....

Journal Entry 9 by boirina from Mallorca - Calvià, Illes Balears/Islas Baleares Spain on Tuesday, May 22, 2007
The book got here today. I'll check with eponine254 to see if s/he wants to read it before I pass it on to beekeeper40. There's one book to read before I start this one.

Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 10 by boirina from Mallorca - Calvià, Illes Balears/Islas Baleares Spain on Thursday, June 28, 2007
The book left for beekeeper40 on Monday, so it won't take long to reach her.

I must admit that I didn't manage to finish it. I suppose it wasn't the right time for me to read it. I guess it's just not the right book to read while trying to give up smoking. It made me want to smoke so badly that I had to close the book and go back to it when I felt stronger. In the end I just decided to give up the book. Funny how people who are trying to give up drugs and drinking always keep on smoking. (sigh)

I must say that I liked how it was written, though. :)

Hi everyone. I just finished. I was thrilled, it's one of the best books I've read this summer. I read it in less than a day and my feelings varied from sobbing, chuckling to myself, frowning.

I wrote all of my thoughts here

Journal Entry 22 by marsala from - Ergens in de provincie, Noord-Brabant Netherlands on Thursday, March 20, 2008
Wow! This book has got me hooked (hmm, not very wise choice of words) from the first page. I don't really care about the controversy, especially not about the criminal recors, because that's not what the story is about. It is all about frey's struggle with his addiction and The Fury, and I believe that is true. I think it is very well writen and it really let's you into Frey's mind.

Edit March 26th: It's in the mail to Mizuchy

Journal Entry 23 by Mizuchy from Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania and Partium Romania on Monday, April 28, 2008
I should have taped the conversation I had at the post-office, while picking the book up. The lady behind the counter initially refused to give it to me on the grounds that the name on the package was not identical to the one on my ID card. In the end I persuaded her that I am the one and the same person. But the entire conversation was just hilarious...
I'll read it asap and send it onward!

Edit 8 May: Finished reading - wonderful book, I was engulfed in it for two long train journeys, oblivious to whatever was going on around me.
Will send it onwards as soon as I get the address from the next in line.

A good solid read. The style can throw readers off a little, but otherwise it was a good book. I have wanted to read this for ages and now I can count it read! Thanks for letting me participate in the ring.

Off in the mail as soon as I get the nexr address.

Journal Entry 29 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Monday, October 6, 2008
The book arrived here yesterday,6th October, so that was quite quick.
I've already browsed the first few pages and just know I am going to enjoy it.
Thanks acountkel for including me in this ring.
I'll pm nynjagrrrl right away as I don't think it will take me long to read.

Journal Entry 30 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Sunday, October 12, 2008
Firstly, acountkel please note that nynjagrrrl has advised that she's already read the book so does not want it now. I have pm'ed hopi100 for her address so it will move on just as soon as I receive that.

Well! That was a curious, hard, emotionally draining read. I make a practice of not reading others' JE before I read a book so did not know about the controversy about its authenticity. Glad that I didn't. Parts of it were specially hard for me as I have a youngish godson with the same name who has had a slightly similar path so I kept seeing my James all through it. Not easy.

Authentic or not, it is very believable; heart wrenching in its way, and horrid to think of the small recovery percentages. I really would like to read "My Friend Leonard" so must try to track that down.

Journal Entry 31 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Saturday, October 25, 2008
Posted off to hopi100 last week. Hope it travels safely.
Delighted to have found someone in Aussie with a copy of My Friend Leonard and hopefully I'll receive that soon. LUCKY!

So glad to have taken part in this ring. Thanks acountkel.
