This is a truly extraordinary book which has already become a bestseller all over the world in hardback. Read as much by adults as the older children for whom it was originally published, it is the story of a 9yr old called Bruno, another boy called Schmuel – and a fence. It is Berlin, year 1942.

When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far, far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance. But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. And that’s when he meets Schmuel – the boy in the striped pyjamas.

Back home to me.

This book is a very quick read so I don't expect people to hold onto it for long - although I will keep to the normal rules of please pass on within a month on receiving please. If you have problems though and real life gets in the way please let me know and I will be very understanding!! I have not had much luck with previous bookrings - they all seem to get stuck or lost in the post - so I am keeping everything crossed for this one. It should help that is has ended up being uk only - but I would be happy to add internationals on after it has been back here and Weebly-Boy has read it - as it will then become a bookray.

This book really reminded me of the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, just as it was written very much from the point of view of a child - this time a 9 year old child - and his innocence came through beautifully in the text. I won't say what the book is about as it won't even tell you on the back of the book, as it says 'we think it is important that you start to read without knowing what it is about'. But suffice it to say it was well written, very believeable, the innocence shined through and you gradually realise what Bruno is tlaking about.

I would like my 11 y/o to read this once this book has travelled to a view other bookcrossers.

Trying to write a comment without giving away the story line is tricky, but I agree with Weebly that it was good to start reading the book without knowing anything about the story.
All I can say is OUCH!!! I was ready for the ending, but not ready if you see what I mean. A powerful story, full of the innocence of childhood . I suspect that children won't feel quite the same as an adult at the end - it will be interesting to see their opininons.
I already have A/R's address so I will get this in the post this morning

Written from the perspective of a child, complete with the innocence of childhood, this was an incrediably powerful story, and one that will remain with me for sometime.

I have soulbalm's address, so this will be in the post on Monday.

This book isn't a happy read, and doesn't give you a warm feeling about humanity. But I'm very glad I read it. It is at once terrifying and charming - it's the mixture of childhood innocence next door to absolute horror. In many ways it was a very satisfying read (although I found Bruno's lack of knowledge about Jews, etc slightly unbelievable)

I will post on to Scotsbookie this week.

It's difficult to say anything about the book without giving it away, but I read with increasing horror at what I began to understand. The ending is very, I want to say ironic but don't feel that's quiet the right word. Well written, very believable & I loved Bruno's innocence about the world he lives in.

Thank you weebly for the chance to read the book. I have Heaven-Ali's address so will have it on its travels agai asap.

The real poignancy of this little novel is in its simplicity. There is little I can say without spoiling it for other readers. I "guessed" how it would end very early on - there is an inevitability to it. A very powerful little book - which I think I will remember for a long time.

Will be sending on to Juliako at the Birmingham meet next week.

Thanks for this - picked it up to just read a few pages and see what it was like and ended up finishing the book.

A useful book to explore these sort of issues with younger (not too young!) readers - and as an adult it would be interesting to read more (perhaps biography) from this sort of perspective.

Will be sending on to akg.

Received safe and sound in the fact.
Thanks everyone for not giving the story away so far. I'll be back soon to give my thoughts!

Journal Entry 20 by LadyIndigo01 from Fordingbridge, Hampshire United Kingdom on Monday, May 21, 2007
A very clever dark book. I wish that I had read it without knowing anything about it but once I started it I remembered a book review I had read about it.
Bruno's innocence makes the book thought provoking and disturbing. Once I guessed what was going to happen I couldnt put the book down and it was like watching a horror film with my hands over my eyes.

Thank you for sharing this book; it will be in the post to akg tomorrow.

Opps! I've had this book for several months without journalling it, sorry. I also read it several months ago so I can't write a very current review. I enjoyed the book, but the main character also annoyed me slightly.

I have PMed tiggsybabes several, but I don't think they have got through. I have got her address from Rabck.com and will post it out tomorrow.
