Journal Entry 1 by indygo88 from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Wednesday, December 27, 2006
"It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .
Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.
This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul."

Received as a Christmas gift from my parents. A wishlist book -- yippee! (hardcover)

I ended up doing this on audio from the library, as I could get to it quicker that way! I liked this book quite a lot, but didn't love it, as I think many people have. I think for me, it's one that needs to sit with me for a while before I fully appreciate it. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about "death" as the narrator. At first I didn't really think that that aspect added much to the story; however, after completing the book, I'm more able to see how it added some insight into the story. The final line of the book was indeed "haunting", and subtley very effective. I found Liesel's character a bit too grown up for her age (i.e. her writings & such), but when you consider how she was forced into growing up rather quickly, perhaps it's not so unbelievable. I imagine tragedy throughout one's life tends to do that to a person.

I'm torn between saving this book in the hopes that a friend or book club member might want to borrow it, and between sharing it with another BookCrosser, as I know it's on a number of wishlists. For now I think I will keep it reserved.

I'm donating this book "to the cause", so to speak. It's now to be a replacement for classicfox's lost copy of her bookring. This one's a brand spankin' new copy, so all you bookringers -- please be nice & help classicfox have a successful ring. Don't stall it! :')

I received this in the mail yesterday. I'm so excited to see that indygo88 has given classicfox's ring new life. Thanks to both of you!

I am just about finished reading The Handmaid's Tale and will be starting this one next.

Journal Entry 7 by minerva1221 from Sachse, Texas USA on Tuesday, July 15, 2008
I finished this early last week. I enjoyed following the story but I don't think it is one that will stay with me for any length of time.

I tried PM-ing the next person on the list but can't find any user by that name. I also pm'd classicfox for advice in case the spelling was wrong. If I don't hear something back soon, I'll go ahead and try the next person on the list.

Wow - what an interesting book. I was trying to explain it to some folks and they were intrigued (and bummed this was a bookring and I couldn't pass it directly to them). I really enjoyed the words. Zusak puts them together very well.

I've PM'd LMM twice and no answer. I'll post in the forums and if I don't hear back by next week, will check with the next person...

update 9/9: no answer from LMM, sent to next person on list

This book arrived safely here in Trinity, Alabama this afternoon, caught it in my mailbox - unlike a couple other packages, which were found strewn about my neighbor's lawn due to high winds, no thanks to my idiot mail carrier who propped them atop my mailbox because she was too lazy to come ring my doorbell! Thank you for posting it to me tenneh! I have quite a few in front of it, but I will get to it shortly.

I'm really sorry to have kept this for so long. It was the third 500+ paged ray/ring that arrived in the same week. I'm almost finished with it though and will be sending it along shortly (will do another journal entry when I do). I haven't been able to get in touch with MicheleReads and she doesn't seem active so I'm skipping her. I'm enjoying the book so far! Thanks again!

I was disappointed, maybe I built myself up with all the positive reviews here on BC. I almost gave up but decided since so many people love this book and it is a ring I would finish the book and send it on its way. Glad I finished it. I will mail it either later this week or next, when I get to the PO. Thank you for sharing this book.
