This was an unexpectedly excellent novel, purchased on a whim from QPB. It tells the story of California physician Pete Barrington, his wife Angela and daughter Toni, who as the book begins are making a road trip from Fresnoe, California, where they've been living, back to Pete's home town of Loring, Mississippi. As the story progresses, we learn why the Barrington family is fleeing Fresnoe, and explore the emotional complications of what awaits them in Loring. When midway through the novel one of the central characters is murdered the emotional undertones become more pronounced, and Pete and a handful of his Loring neighbours have to come to grips with their shared past. I'm afraid my review isn't doing justice to this book's psychological complexity, nor to Steve Yarbrough's gift for characterization and dialogue. (His Wikipedia write-up points out Yarbrough's treatment of themes and characters from the American South has resulted in comparisons between his writing and that of Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, and John Grisham.)

I have this friend in Vancouver who is an endless source of interesting facts and niche interests....one of my favorite people. She sends me alerts to any releases in my town, Nelson BC. This one time I decided to go out and see if I could catch a book at one of the local hotels. It was my first experience. Armed with the secret knowledge of where the book has been dropped, I felt like an international woman of mystery crashing a 12 year old's scavenger hunt. I spotted it, a little surprised that my cyber info had birthed a real live book into my hands....and then took it, which felt a bit like stealing. It was new. Smooth. I was quite excited and emailed my friend, slightly embarrassed at how excited I was.
When I went to leave it somewhere I intially wanted to put it in an Irish Pub while I was on a trip with my boyfriend to....Ireland. Culturally though, a person in a pub in Northern Ireland leaving a book on a shelf and then walking away, would instantly arrouse suspicions of the bomb-ish sort. And so, I gave up that little fantasy.
So, as a last ditch effort, while in the Belfast airport, I decided to write a large note on the book telling of my innocent intentions and then left it in the women's washroom. An hour later it was gone. I hope it's having fun, I imagine it took a flight to England.
So, thank you goatgrrl, for the release, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Cheers to the person who picked it up, hope you have fun with it.
