Synopsis
An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Gregory Maguire just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature.

Really good book. More serious than I thought it would be. I can see how the author tried to create a real world from a fantasy.
The end was a bit rushed & I would have preferred a happier ending for some of the characters.

I picked this up at the London bookcrossing well actually microsquid did and I put it in my bag, i'll read it and bring it to cork for mircosquid.

I couldn't put this down, I enjoyed reading it. Although I was left wanting more from the story, I found it left alot of unanswered questions in the story as it rushed through the lives of the different characters.

I'm not familiar with the Oz story (only with the very basics), but I liked this book a lot. It made the Wicked Witch a character in her own right, for whom the Dorothy episode was only a very small part of her life. It wasn't about Dorothy and whatever she was looking for, it was about guilt, forgiveness, and I loved how that was brought together in the end.

Lief read it too and liked it. Always nice to read the same books and discuss them!

Will probably bring it back to Hotel de Doelen where I found it.
